The AKIA (Association of Korean Immunologists in America) was established in 2013 with an aim to promote scientific interactions between immunologists in USA, Canada, and Korea. We currently have more than 50 regularly members from across USA and Canada. Since 2014, we have been hosting biannual AKIA symposiums: La Jolla (2014), Bethesda (2016), Ann Arbor (2018), and New Haven (2020, virtual). The current council would like to host 5th AKIA symposium in Montreal, Canada, in 2022. These meetings have offered excellent venues for sharing scientific knowledge and wisdom, strengthening existing network, and developing new collaborative projects. As an assembly of Korean immunologists working in North America, we have been catalyzing interactions between KAI (Korean Association of Immunologists) and AAI (American Association of Immunologists) by cohosting Guest Society Symposia at the annual AAI meetings since 2014. Further fostering interactions between AKIA and KAI, we have joint symposium sessions at the annual KAI meetings in Korea. It is with great honor and privilege for me to take the President position heading the AKIA Council as of June 2021 with a 2-year term. I would like to thank the great leadership shown by Drs. Charlie Surh, Cheong-Hee Chang (University of Michigan), Jae Jung (Lerner Research Institute), Chang Kim (University of Michigan), Booki Min (Northwestern University), Insoo Kang (Yale University), Hyun Park (NCI), Minsoo Kim (University of Rochester), Jeoung-Sook Shin (UCSF), who shaped this fine organization. I am also happy to work with the newly elected council members, Drs. Ae-Kyung Yi (Vice-President, University of Tennessee ), Seungmin Hwang (Secretary, VIR Biotech), and Sun Jung Kim (Treasurer, Northwell Health/Hofstra University) who have tremendous energy to serve the growing community of AKIA. I am confident that AKIA will continue to play a pivotal role in catalyzing collaborations between immunologists in USA, Canada, and Korea. With this, I extend my warm invitation to Korean immunologists working in USA or Canada to join AKIA.
